Game Ball for games 5 & 6: Matt Rowley
13 05 2010Tough couple of games for the Beers, but Game Ball still has to go out. This week goes to Rowley, who was solid at the plate. Average doesnt reflect it the best (3/6, .500), but he was hitting the ball hard when he was getting out. Stepped up big on Defense, filling in to pitch when we didn’t have a pitcher and playing solid in the outfield. Good games this week.

Beers Sloppy Play Results in Two Losses to Fighting Penguins
13 05 2010While there usually isn’t much to say in a loss, I would like to use this space to mention this… “Dan Budnyk, you have some pretty cleats.”

Game Ball for games 3 & 4: Gary Neff
12 05 2010Game Ball for last night goes to Gary. He played through a painful injury to the groin and didnt let it get in his way of still getting on base at important times and making a great catch in RF. Just think… that could have been Budnyk. Ice that groin and get ready for next week!

Game Ball for games 1 & 2: Mike Leonard
5 05 2010Chicks dig the long ball…
Game ball for last night goes to Mike Leonard. A 7 for 8, .875 AVG, 2 (over the fence) HR, 5 RBIs, a 1.750 Slugging percentage and a team leading 6 Runs. Good D around the field making some good stretches at first. Had some good D in the outfield, pulling a true Bad News Bears move to cut off one Dan Budnyk to make a clean play without flailing to the ground to stop the ball. Plus, he wasnt drunk or crabby (must be because it was the early games).
Good game Crazy Eyes

Don’t Call it a Comeback. Beers Sweep Mustangs in Opener.
29 04 2010The wind was blowing briskly in Crystal City as the Beers showed up for their 2010 season opener. As the players came into the ball park, one thing was on Coach Crosby’s mind. “Where the hell is everyone?” he said over and over. As the 6:00pm game time approached, the Beers didn’t have enough bodies to field a team…this includes starting pitcher, Mike Peterson. Shortly after 6, the game started with backup pitcher Jon Rojas on the mound.
The Beers started out strong scoring 16 runs in the first 3 innings. The high power offense included 2 homeruns by Mike Leonard and 8 RBIs by Phil Crosby. After a shaky 3rd inning, Rojas was replaced by Peterson, who only let up 1 run in relief. The Beers went on to win the game by a final of 21-7.
The Beers were anxious to get through game 2, as the Washington Capitals were preparing to play game 7. They attempted to coerce the umpire into starting early, but the attempts were futile. Mike Peterson took the mound and proceeded to have a rough first inning. He gave up 10 runs on walks and homeruns. The Beers refused to sit back on offense though, and reduced the Mustangs lead to 10-7 after the top of the second. The Mustangs made it 14-7 after 2 complete innings, but the Beers were determined to buckle down and stop the bleeding. After a big 8 run inning in the 4th, the Beers were back in the driver’s seat. Two innings of solid defense later, the Beers found themselves with the second victory of the night by a score of 20-18.

Game two went just as well for the Beers as they kept up the offense and collected 19 hits on the night. Not A Chance proved to be the best choice of team names as they fell 14-2 to the Beers.
Notable stats for the game include: homeruns by Phil Crosby and Dan Budnyk. Jon Rojas, Ryan Reese, Matt Daw, Cliff, and Sprad provided 1.000 performances at the plate.
