Flawless Victory

The streets of Abingdon and Glebe Road are ecstatic as the Beers (4-0) are off to a franchise record start.   4 people were in attendace at Barcroft stadium to witness the Beers’ second straight sweep of the season.  This sweep was courtesy of Crystal City Sember. Not a bad way to start off the season.

Chants of “Why are these guys in C-league?” and “Hey blue, move these guys up to A” echoed through the stadium as Chris Stemp hit his 5th homerun in 4 games.  Stemp also had many gems in the field as well.  He had a couple nice grabs at short as well as doubling a man at first off of a rocket line drive.  There were moments of concern however when Stemp fired a laser at a Sember player on his way to first.

“I could see 3 people. I aimed for the one in the middle,” said Stemp of the errant throw.  Coach Crosby declined to comment after the game.

Dan Budnyk made his debut after contract negotiations finally came to a close.  Budnyk struggled a little at the plate going 1 for 7, but provided the Beers with 2 RBIs. Matt Rowley has yet to come to agreement with the Beers.

New acquisition Chris “Chief Wiggum” Wiggins went 2 for 6 on the night.  Wiggins solid play in the field was overshadowed by being picked off at first…. in softball….a game with no stealing… When asked for comment, coach Crosby replied, “He’s gonna be a solid player for us. The transition from baseball to softball is not an easy one. These guys bleed for the game.”

Crosby was a homerun away from the “tricycle” (that’s right folks, three cycles in three games). Crosby blames it on the team, who he said “Played too hard and didn’t allow for him to get a 4th at bat.” However, Crosby did provide a self made double play and a heads up tag at third where he injured his hand.  X-rays were done after the game and came back negative.

Catcher Jon Rojas is now 10 for 15 with 10 singles on the season. At this pace, he is looking to break Lichiro’s (Ichiro’s softball playing sister) season record for singles. Ryan Reese also kept up his solid hitting as he went 5 for 8 on the night with an inside the park homerun.

The Beers have off next Monday for labor day and will resume play on Monday, September 10th. The game is scheduled to be under the lights at 8:30pm at beautiful Barcroft Park.
