The Beers opened their Fall 2009 season on a humid, unpleasant Wednesday night.  The night turned out to be more unpleasant for Not A Chance, as the Beers opened up the game with 18 runs. Both Phil Crosby and Ryan Reese saw three plate appearances in the first inning. After taking a couple innings off, the Beers won game one by a score of 22-11 off of 28 hits.

Notable stats for the game include: Phil Crosby, Chris Stemp, and Jon Rojas going 5 for 5 on the night.

Game two went just as well for the Beers as they kept up the offense and collected 19 hits on the night. Not A Chance proved to be the best choice of team names as they fell 14-2 to the Beers.

The Beers pulled into Barcroft Park tonight with only one thing on their minds. Winning the Fall 2008 championship.  They knew winning was not going to be an easy task as they were playing the 2nd place Hard Times Cafe.  Hard Timess definitely came out to play as they scored 2 quick runs in the top of the first inning.  In the Beers first at bat, catcher Jon Rojas got on base and came in on Stemp’s 9th homerun of the season.  After scoring 5 in the bottom of the first, the Beers held Hard Times scoreless for 3 straight innings.  The Beers kept piling the runs on and scored 4 more in the bottom of the 5th. Final score: 10-4. The Beers were one win away from the championship. Coach Phil Crosby could feel it and pumped up the guys in the dugout before the next game.

The Beers could taste it. Victory was only 55 minutes away. Game 2 started out with both the Beers and Hard Times going scoreless in the 1st inning. The middle of the Beers’ lineup came up big in game 2, providing 9 of the Beers’ 15 runs. Most notably was RF Ryan Reese’s 2 run inside the park homerun.  After one sloppy inning of play, where the Beers let up 6 runs, they went on to play solid defense and came away with the win. 

Final score: 15-9. Beers are officially the Fall 2008 Wednesday league champions.

The Beers came out to Jennie Dean Park to take on their rivals, the Bashers.  Most of the meetings usually end up in Beers’ wins, but the Beers know not to take the Bashers lightly.  The Bashers were able to acquire some solid talent in the off season, making them a threat to the Beers quest for the Fall championship.

Game 1 was an absolute battle as both teams were putting runs on the board at will.  Surprisingly, there were barely any errors in the game… just solid hitting on both sides.  Going into the top of the 6th, the game was tied at 10. The Beers started off the inning with a 2 run bomb by Chris Stemp, his second of the game, and ended with another 2 run shot by Sprad. With momentum on their side, the Beers went out and played lights out defense to win game 1 by the score of 16-10.

The Beers looked at game 2 as a chance to make a statement… AND what a statement they made.  3 home runs were hit in the game. 2 by shortstop Chris Stemp (8) and a blast by left fielder Matt Rowley (3).  The Beers would not relent on offense and won game 2 by a score of 24-14.

The big story of the game though, is shortstop Chris Stemp has pulled ahead in the batting title race. Will Matt Rowley be able to reclaim the #1 spot which he has held almost all season? Stayed tuned as the Beers only have 4 games left this season.

The Beers came out to Barcroft Park for an early series against Ragtag.  Starting pitcher, Mike Peterson, was late yet again, so left fielder Matt Rowley got the call to the mound.  Matt let up two runs in the first inning, but he was quickly helped out by the Beers offense, which scored seven runs in the bottom of the second. The Beers went on to score ten more runs in the game, taking game 1 by the score of 17 to 5.

In game 2, the Beers came out swinging once again.  Scoring 8 runs (7 reported), the Beers created quite a comfort zone and started to relax.  This caught up to the Beers in the 3rd inning. Up 13 to 2, the Beers gave up 7 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  After a quick exchange between Beers’ catcher Jon Rojas, the umpire, and a Ragtag batter, the Beers turned the offense back on.  The outcome was a LONG 5th inning in which the Beers scored another 7 runs, to win the game 20-9 (21-9 unoffically). 

Update: League officials have decided to fine Beers’ pitcher, Mike Peterson, for every game in which he is late. More will be announced as the details of the fines are firmed up.
